California pest control CEU requirements
How many CEUs does California require for pest control licence renewal?
It depends which licence you hold — California sets a different obligation for each tier, and they are not even measured the same way. Operator and Field Representative owe 16, 20 or 24 hours per three-year period — one, two or three branches held; Applicator owe 12 hours per three-year period. There is no single pooled number, which is the most common reason somebody arrives at renewal short.
Key factIssuing agency: California Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB), Department of Consumer Affairs
- Requirement
- Set per licence tier — see the table below
- Cycle length
- 36 months
- Deadline
- All CE hours must be completed by 30 JUNE, and renewal plus payment submitted by the same date. Keep the certificates — they are uploaded with the online renewal. Miss it and the licence goes DELINQUENT for up to 90 days with an added fee, and here is the part that catches people: the licence is NOT VALID during delinquency, so you cannot legally work while you sort it out. Any licence not renewed by 30 SEPTEMBER is cancelled outright.
- Accepted formats
- SPCB-approved classroom courses, SPCB-approved online and video courses, Courses must be Board-approved in advance — an unapproved course earns nothing, however good it was

- Application fee
- Not verified yet — we only publish it once it is
- Exam structure
- Three licence levels, each with its own SPCB exam: Applicator (entry), Field Representative, and Operator (the level that lets a business be registered). Field Representative carries pre-licensing training and experience requirements — Branch 3 requires a minimum of 100 hours of training and experience, at least 80 of them actual field work, and must include Integrated Pest Management and the effect of structural pest control on water quality.
What each licence tier owes
| Licence tier | Requirement | Detail that catches people out |
|---|---|---|
| Operator and Field Representative | 16, 20 or 24 hours per three-year period — one, two or three branches held | The total is not free-form. Every cycle must contain at least 8 hours of Board-approved Structural Pest Control Act, Rules and Regulations, or related agency regulations; at least 4 technical hours SPECIFIC TO EACH branch held; and, for anyone holding Branch 2 or Branch 3, at least 2 hours of Integrated Pest Management. The remainder is general. Hitting the total with the wrong mix fails the renewal just as hard as being short. |
| Applicator | 12 hours per three-year period | Fixed composition: 6 hours pesticide application and use, 2 hours Integrated Pest Management, and 4 hours on the Structural Pest Control Act and its rules and regulations. |
