Illinois pest control CEU requirements
How many CEUs does Illinois require for pest control licence renewal?
It depends which licence you hold — Illinois sets a different obligation for each tier, and they are not even measured the same way. Certified Structural Pest Control Technician owe 9 classroom contact hours at department-approved seminars per three-year certificate, in blocks of 3 hours or more; Non-certified employee owe no certificate — works under the supervision of a certified technician; Commercial Structural Pest Control Business Licence owe annual renewal by 1 december; $150 renewal fee and insurance on file. There is no single pooled number, which is the most common reason somebody arrives at renewal short.
Key factIssuing agency: Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) — Division of Environmental Health, Structural Pest Control Program
- Requirement
- Set per licence tier — see the table below
- Cycle length
- 36 months
- Deadline
- Certificates run three years and expire 31 December. The renewal must be POSTMARKED by 1 December of the expiry year; after that a $75 late charge applies and the certificate lapses on 31 December even if the renewal is later processed. Up to one year after expiry you can still renew with the 9 hours, renewal fee and late charge. Lapsed more than one year (and under five) means re-examination plus application, renewal and late fees.

- Exam structure
- Every applicant takes the General Standards exam, which alone certifies a technician for general-use pesticides. Restricted-use certification needs General Standards plus at least one sub-category exam, and a qualifying education, approved course or experience record. 70% is required on each exam. IDPH schedules the exams from its Pest Control Exam Calendar; the application must reach IDPH at least 15 days before the chosen date. Commercial restricted-use work requires the matching sub-category from A–D or H; sub-categories E–G alone do not permit commercial restricted-use work. A business cannot be licensed until it employs at least one certified technician.
